Menorca gravel ride North: biking & hiking on the Cami de Cavalls

Route Description

Menorca is a beautiful Balearic Island to discover by gravel biking. This gravel ride starts from our camp-site near Son Bou and visits the northern area of the Island. Neighbouring island Mallorca may be a better known cycling destination. But the family friendly Menorca is a real gem once you’ve discovered where to look for unpaved gravel routes.

Since 1993, Menorca has been declared a biosphere reserve by Unesco. The island is recognized for a high level of compatibility between conservation of its natural environment on one side and cultural heritage on the other. The Mediterranean landscapes of Menorca are of an exceptional quality, which makes it a beautiful canvas to explore by gravel biking.

One of the main features of the island is the Cami de Cavalls, a historical path built around the island for defensive purposes in the 1300’s. In more recent years the path has been restored and public accessibility has been established based on popular demand. Now open to the public, the Cami de Cavalls connects some of the less accessible areas of the island via the beautiful coastline of Menorca. In this gravel ride I included part of the Cami de Cavals connecting the Far de Favaritx (Favàritx Lighthouse) with the city of Mahon (Maó).

Biking parts of the Cami de Cavalls was great, it delivered on its promise for stunning views of small beaches and bays around Menorca. But you should also be aware that it’s pretty rough in some parts. I could manage on my gravelbike, but at times the terrain is safer if you hike-a-bike.

• Tip: Menorca summers are hot hot hot, so carry enough water and use sunblock.
• Tip: Expect hikers on the Cami de Cavalls. Also be prepared to hike-a-bike small parts of the route.
• Tip: There are not that many stops once you enter the Cami de Cavalls. On this route you can re-stock at Es Grau.
