Gravel Route

Gravel ride exploring Menorca from Son Bou to Far de Cavalleria

63 km 720 m Medium

Route Description

This was my first gravel ride on Menorca. Actually more a ride to explore the island with a few gravel roads, about 10% maybe. Mainly this was a smooth paved ride to the Faro de Cavalleria in the north. And a small sniff of the Cami the Cavals.

Menorca is a wonderful island to discover by gravel bike. This gravel route starts from our camp-site near Son Bou and visits the northern area of the Island. The roads to the Faro de Cavalleria pass some iconic beaches. Some of them are not even accessible by car. The views as you get closer to the coastline are beautiful. I always like it when you ride along the coast and the road takes you in and out of a view of the sea and its small bays and beaches.

The Far de Cavalleria (Cavalleria lighthouse) is located at the most northern point of Menorca: the Cape Cavalleria. There’s a restaurant here that wasn’t open when I passed, but when open you should be able to enjoy the stunning views and fill up on water and food. From the lighthouse, the route heads east down a part of the Cami de Cavalls toward Platges de Fornells. Since this was my first experience with the Cami de Cavalls I found it absolutely spectacular. It really is a beautiful unpaved path surrounding the entire island that gives you the most amazing views of the Menorcan beaches and the mediterranean sea.

When the route leaves the Cami de Cavalls behind at Platges de Fornells it heads back south towards Son Bou. Both on your way up and on your way down you have the option to include the biggest climb of Menorca, El Toro, at es Mercadal. I’ve included El Toro in one of my other tours around the island. The climb is very steep at points but once you’re on the top it provides you with a stunning views over most of this gem of an island.

  • Tip: Menorca summers are hot hot hot, so carry enough water and use sunblock.
  • Tip: Expect hikers on the Cami de Cavalls. Also be prepared to hike-a-bike small parts of the route.
  • Tip: If you’re up for it, include the El Toro mountain climb to enjoy fabulous views over the entire island.
