Gravel Route

Gravel ride connecting the Utrechtse Heuvelrug gravel – 100km base version

100 km 320 m Medium

Route Description

This route connects many of the best gravel sections across the Utrechtse Heuvelrug into one long and varied ride. The suggested starting point is Buiten in de Kuil in Lage Vuursche, a relaxed place to roll out and grab a coffee before heading into the forest. That said, the route is designed to be flexible, so you can just as easily start from Café de Proloog in Amerongen, Driebergen-Zeist train station, or even Vliegbasis Soesterberg if that fits your plans better.

From the start you quickly dive into the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, linking together quiet gravel roads, forest lanes and some of the nicest riding in the area. The idea behind this route is simple: connect the different parts of the ridge in one continuous gravel experience. It might not always have the highest gravel percentage compared to some shorter routes, but it definitely brings you to a lot of places and gives you a great overall feel for the region.

Most of the gravel on this route is smooth and fast, making it accessible for riders on almost any bike. Whether you’re riding a dedicated gravel bike, a light touring setup or even a sturdy road bike with wider tires, the surfaces are generally friendly and flowing.

If you’re looking for an even bigger day out, there is also an extended 140 km version of the route that adds extra gravel sections and explores more corners of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

This is a route that works well for both locals and visitors: long forest stretches, quiet paths and a great way to discover just how much gravel the Utrechtse Heuvelrug has to offer.

Timeas Schim van der Loeff

Hi there, I’m Timeas Schim van der Loeff (1991). Sinds I was a little kid, cycling was always connected to adventure. When I was 9 years old riding around the "IJsselmeer", or traveling from the Netherlands to Greece without any know-how when I was 20 and going on cycling holidays with friends. Starting road cycling in 2019 with the 100 Cols Ride (more than 4.000 kilometers and 70.000 meters of positive elevation) made me more ambitious and made me want to improve my level and passion for cycling. Over time this lead to starting my own company Cycling Circles in 2023 from which I create routes for all kinds of cycling events. For example The Ride, Tour for Life, Homesport Events, Ride for the Roses and Duchenne Heroes. I also support and guide cycling events, travels and rides, where I hope to add to the ultimate cycling experience, not only by creating the route, for participants.

The ultimate experience of cycling for me is riding in the mountains and nature, it doesn’t matter if it’s on or off road. These are places where I can challenge myself physically and mentally. This gives me the feeling of freedom and that I’m alive. It makes me feel small and strong at the same time. Are you joining me on of the events, travels or rides?
