Gravel Route

Gravel ride from Landgoed (estate) Haanwijk crossing to nature reserve Maashorst

Route Description

This gravel ride starts quietly at Landgoed Haanwijk, following the Dommel out of the trees and into open farmland. The gravel and unpaved roads let you settle into a rhythm before the kilometres begin to add up. The route runs close to ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Rosmalen without getting pulled in. You are never far from towns, yet most of the time they stay just out of sight. Long farm roads and quiet connectors near Heesch and Nistelrode make this a section where pace comes easily and the riding feels uncomplicated.

The shift into De Maashorst happens almost without warning. Gravel turns looser, paths roll more, and the landscape feels less managed. This is the heart of the route. Quiet, slightly rough, and worth taking your time through. This route only carries a small part of the Maashorst in it, but this beautiful nature reserve is definitely worth re-visiting another time. After passing near Uden and Veghel, the surface firms up again and the ride begins come to an end. The final kilometres back to st Michielsgestel are gentle and familiar, with a nice ending in Landgoed Haanwijk from where we started.

This is a route built on flow rather than difficulty. Close to cities, yet rarely busy. A ride where the landscape slowly changes and the gravel quietly does its job.

  • Tip: Be prepared for muddy sections on the route during autumn and winter
  • Tip: De Maashorst is a real gravel gem in the Netherlands. For example it's also in the Liberation Divide route.

Since I moved to near "de Loonse en Drunense Duinen" national park, I've been considering buying a mountain bike. Then a friend came over for a visit with a gravel bike. That's when I knew this was the bike I'd have the most fun with. I love exploring, and on my gravel bike, I search for the best trails and the most beautiful places to enjoy. From the Netherlands to far beyond the border, I'm up for any challenge.
